For Bella (Little Shadow)

This post is dedicated to all the little shadows we’ve been fortunate enough to love, for however long. Saying good-bye is never easy so let’s just say “see you soon” and know your heart is just as full as it was before they had to leave. My heart goes out to my friend who this poem is dedicated to in navigating her way through the loss of her little shadow, Bella.

For Bella

You’re my little shadow, my guardian angel with invisible wings;

You guard me from darkness, you are sunshine in a wiggly, wooly form.

You tell me stories, with each bark and each tail wag and each sloppy kiss.

You’re a warmer of cold toes, a safe harbor in a stormy day, a halo of goodness and light powered by pure love.

You’ve given me your heart, sworn allegiance to me and fought all those who threaten me.

You’re my little shadow, my sweet girl and I’ll never love anyone as much I love you.

I’ll miss your paws ringing out the cadence of your walk,

I’ll miss your voice, your howl, your whine, your bark.

I will treasure every minute we’ve laughed, loved, walked and smelled the roses.

Every chase you’ve given, every ball you’ve caught;

those eyes, that look that says,

“You’re my human, my big shadow and I will never love anyone as much as I love you.”

You’ll never leave me, you’ll never be truly gone. Your spirit, your loving nature lives on and on.

In every memory we’ve made, you’ve left paw prints on my heart.

I know our souls will meet again, although I know not when.

Rest in peace, my little shadow.
